Mother Nature’s Viagra?

Oysters au Natural Oysters have been known as a food for lovers and an aphrodisiac since the Roman times. Roman emperors paid for them by their weight in gold. Aphrodite, the Greek Goddess of love, came from the sea on an oyster shell to give birth to Eros, the word “aphrodisiac” was born. Casanova used to eat a dozen oysters before he will even start a meal. Oysters have been an very important food since the Neolithic period and were cultivated long before the Christian era.

“  The oyster is a prolific bivalve, raises its young inside its shell. How it piddles is a riddle, but it does so what the hell !”

Passing the Port.

The tradition for “passing the port” is one left to us by the British Navy. Like most things regarding traditions who and where it started is always a debatable point with no conclusive answer. This is a very simple tradition and no need to remember a lot. As with this one there are a few variations, so I explain the one I was taught.

Port Decanter and Glass The decanter of port is placed in front of the host with the stopper removed. The host serve the guest on his right first before passes it to the guest on the left, who in turn serves the person on his right, before passes it on again. Continuing clockwise until it ends up in front of the host again.

The Green Fairy.

Absinthe Drinker by Viktor Oliva (1861-1928) Nobody can say for certain where she came from. Many an artist and writer in Paris looked her up for inspiration. She was constantly seen with Charles Baudelaire, Paul Verlaine, Arthur Rimbaud, Vincent van Gogh, Oscar Wilde, and Aleister Crowley. They were devotees to the Green Fairy, also known by some as the Green Muse.

Die verskil is dat die een sommer in die mikrogolf oond gedoen word. Ongelukkig is ek geen mikrogolf “expert” nie, maar dit het baie goed uit gekom vir eerste probeer slag. Ek raai aan dat daar so oefenlopie geneem word voordat die familie oorgenooi word.

 

 

Canard à la Presse.

Restaurant Tour d' Argent - Paris A classical dish created at the beginning of the 19th century by a restaurateur called Mechenet. The popularity and success of this dish was owed to the Duke of Chartres who commended it in Paris. Today the most famous place in Paris to eat Pressed Duck is the restaurant La Tour d’ Argent. When the famous chef Frederic took the restaurant over he decided to number each pressed duck served. Over the years many famous people ate at the restaurant and many photos of statesmen and actors are displayed on the walls.

 

 

Steak Tartar - Love or loath it!

tartar Legend has it that this dish originated from the nomadic Tartar (Turkic speaking) tribe who lived on the southern part of Russia. They were very good horseman, hardworking and always on the move. Time for cooking was very limited, so pieces of meat were placed underneath their saddles while riding, this tenderising the meat and easier to eat raw.
